Voronezh remembers the Blockade

The 27th of January is one the most important dates in the Russian history. The destructive and prolonged blockade of Leningrad, which lasted 872 terrible days, started in 1941 and ended in 1944. On this day, we remember all those who could not survive and, of course, we honor those who survived and won the victory. But we pay special attention to those who have survived all this and have lived till present days. They are very few of them and most of them live in their native City Hero. But not all. There, in Voronezh, live those who do not remember the war, but went through the harsh times of the besieged Leningrad.

On the anniversary day of the lifting of the blockade, the founder of the charitable foundation “Kindness”, a deputy of the City Duma, Alexander Zhukov visited Evdokia Ivanovna Merzlikina to congratulate on the holiday and show gratitude to the entire generation that passed through the Great Patriotic War. The participant of the blockade was born in 1919, and this year she will be 95 years old. She remembers everything that happened then. After all, it is impossible to forget this. Evdokia Ivanovna is very hospitable while receiving guests and was happy to receive gifts and a gratitude letter in honor of the holiday. Alexander Zhukov visits her every year. The “Kindness” Foundation has already helped with food (flour, cereals, sugar, etc.) and some household articles. The most desirable gift, which Evdokia Ivanovna has dreamt for a long time, is a gas stove.

The congratulation of a witness of those events Evdokia Ivanovna, which was congratulated by Alexander Zhukov, is an example to follow. Caring for the living and the memory of the dead is everyone’s duty. We have no right to forget, we should be thankful for people who sacrificed their lives for us, so we can live in peace. This heroic deed as well as many other ones;[ during the Great Patriotic War, must be kept in the memory of the country and the tradition of its celebration is passed on from generation to generation.
